Ophthalmic Medical Technology Essentials®

Title: OPH105 Ophthalmic Optics II

Course Description:

The course will introduce the students to advanced ophthalmic principles of lenses and optical devices. The principles of transposition, nominal power, lens aberrations, prism and slab-off are presented. These principles are applied to an understanding of human refractive errors and the lenses required to correct them. Advanced components of the refractive power of the lens will be given, lens power calculations in different meridians, calculating vertical imbalance, calculating base direction of prisms, including base in, base out, base up, base down, and oblique prism. Lifestyle choices of single vision and multifocal glasses will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of taking this course the student will be able to:

Explain the vergence of light

Discuss human visual errors and lens choices for correction

Describe how to use a power cross

Transposition of plus and minus prescriptions

Calculate nominal power

Explain how to use a lens clock

Discuss lens power and position

Differentiate the types of chromatic aberration

Explain Prentice’s rule

Explain the effects of a centered lens in a decentered lens

Calculate total prism and base direction

Calculate vertical imbalance and slab-off

Demonstrate how to measure bifocal in multifocal lenses

Certificate of Completion after Satisfactory Completion of Course
