Learning Outcomes

Philosophy Statement 

This OMT Essentials program supports six General Education Learning Outcomes representing communication, global awareness, critical thinking, information literacy, and scientific and quantitative reasoning. These are the skills necessary to participate effectively within a diverse medical community and global workplace. 

Program Learning Outcome #1 

Demonstrate knowledge of ophthalmic medical, surgical, anatomical, physiological, microbiological, pathological, and pharmacological terminology with appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication in an ambulatory care setting- private medical practice, hospital, or outpatient facility. 

General Education Learning Outcome Supported: Communications 

Program Learning Outcome #2 

Demonstrate knowledge and competency of industry-standard clinical examination, procedural skills, and ophthalmic medical assisting technology, in an ambulatory care setting. 

General Education Learning Outcome Supported: Information Literacy 

Program Learning Outcome #3 

Demonstrate the ability to comprehend and apply aseptic techniques required by an ophthalmic medical and surgical technician. 

General Education Learning Outcome Supported: Critical Thinking 

Program Learning Outcome #4 

Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required for evaluating pre- and postoperative surgical patients.

Demonstrate appropriate legal, ethical, action and behavior, using knowledge of patient psychology and patient education in an ambulatory care setting.

Recognize and relate the importance of professional recognition and career development by staying connected to professional organizations, continuing education, and examination for Certified Ophthalmic Medical Assistant, (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technician (COT), or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT).
